Hachitaro News, 2 to 28 February 2007

Recently, it seems our house cats have settled down in their power order.
No.1   Hachitaro, who cares about, and is afraid of, nothing.
No.2   Kyoku, who has dignity.
No.3   Kuro, who gets scared of many things.

When Hachitaro was small, Kuro was his rough big brother, and Kyoku was his protector.
But now that all three cats are close to the same size, that time might have passed.

Hachitaro has grown up quickly and healthily and has been living in our house without a care. (He probably doesn’t remember his three weeks of life in the wild.) He has never gone hungry, or had scary experiences. Kuro seems to be a nice older brother, and Kyoku plays with him even if he sometimes thinks it’s a bother.

Kuro’s pushy selfishness from before he was fixed has disappeared, and he became a pampered cat. He doesn’t like being alone, and sometimes tries to jump on Kyoku (in his mind, he is playing with him), and hides behind us after that. It seems Kyoku doesn’t like Kuro much, but Kuro is scared of Kyoku and doesn’t dislike him either.

The other day, we bought a digital health meter (i.e., a scale).
Because Hachitaro got bigger, it became hard to weigh him on the 5kg digital kitchen scale, and anyway his weight has settled down.
And then there’s Kuro, who became round in mind and body. He always has an appetite, and his body shape has become like a light bulb: he is overweight. We think his movements have also slowed down.

You usually weigh a cat by holding the cat while you stand on a scale yourself, and later subtract your own weight from the total number. It sounds troublesome.
We thought we could weigh the cats directly on the flat glass top of the new digital scale. And so we could.
Of course they don’t climb up on it by themselves, but we can still easily weigh all three cats.
Recently Hachitaro weighs 3.9kg, Kuro is 5kg, and Kyoku is 4.2kg.
