Amabie

Drypoint etching, 100×150, April 2020

Series: Japanese phantoms

The Amabie is a Japanese yokai spirit that appears from the ocean to warn against plagues. It is said to have first appeared in the 1840s in the sea off Higo Province (now Kumamoto Prefecture). Sharing an image of the Amabie is meant to offer help and protection against an epidemic.
